Choosing the Right Size – Installing Between Brick Walls

For a durable and long-lasting installation, we recommend mounting our single wooden gates onto timber posts.

To establish the correct size to order, we advise that you perform the following:

  1. Measure the space between your brick walls or other masonry supports using a tape measure. When doing this, ensure you keep the tape measure taught to achieve accurate measurement.
  2. Subtract the width of the posts you will use from your brickwork opening dimension.  Post dimensions are visible in the selectable options section of each product page.
  3. When you have this figured out, you will need to deduct 20mm from the remaining measurement to allow for the hinges, latch and the timber’s expansion and contraction throughout the seasons.
  4. The remaining dimension will become the “width” of the gates you will need to order.
  5. Once you know the gate “width” required, you can use this to find out which products are available to suit your requirements. Please view all our single wooden gates shown in the wooden low garden gates & wooden tall side gates categories.
  6. When you have found the design you want to order, choose the “width” option that corresponds to the dimension you calculated and click “add to basket”. Remember to include the relevant posts and fitting pack if necessary.

Measuring Examples For Standard Size Single Wooden Gate

Example 1 – Standard Size

If the gap between your brickwork is 970mm, you can utilise the following:

  • 1x Standard-size single gate with a “width” of 750mm, example product: Quorn Low Garden Gate
  • 2x 100mm Timber posts (concreted into the ground)
  • Remembering the required 20mm to accommodate for your hinges and latch allowance

(Gate Width 750mm, + Two Posts (100mm + 100mm), + 20mm for Hinge & Latch allowance Total= 970mm)

Example 2 – Standard Size

If the gap between your brickwork is 1270mm, you can utilise the following:

  • 1x Standard-size single gate with a “width” of 1050mm, example product: Windsor Wooden Garden Gate
  • 2x 100mm Timber posts (concreted into the ground)
  • Remembering the required 20mm to accommodate for your hinges and latch allowance

(Gate Width 1050mm, + Two Posts (100mm + 100mm), + 20mm for Hinge & Latch allowance Total= 1270mm)

Important Information & General Advice

The height is measured from the underside of the gate to its highest point unless otherwise specified.

The gate sizes listed in the product drop-down menu indicate the total width of the single gate.

The “width” referred to is is different from the gap between your posts. To accommodate hinges and opening tolerances, the gap between the posts should be approximately 20mm wider than the actual gate width, see our examples above in the drop down selectable examples.

For a secure installation, wall-mounted timber posts must be firmly attached to brickwork. Ensure the brickwork is in good condition, as cracks, degradation, or structural weaknesses may compromise support and stability. Posts must always be parallel to each other at all times to ensure a perfect gate fitting, i.e the measurement between the top of your posts, between the middle of your posts, and between the bottom of your posts should always be the same.

In-ground posts must be appropriately sized to support the gates’ weight. If no additional support structure is in place, the posts should be buried 600–900mm deep, depending on ground conditions, and secured with concrete. Posts must always be parallel to each other at all times to ensure a perfect gate fitting, i.e the measurement between the top of your posts, between the middle of your posts, and between the bottom of your posts should always be the same.

For an inward-opening gate, hinges should be attached to the rear face of the gates. For an outward-opening gate, hinges should be mounted on the front face. In both cases, they must be fixed to / through the horizontal bracing, as shown in the example image below.

Please note: all timber gates are subject to slight size variation due to normal shrinkage & expansion.
