How to Install Wall-Mounted Timber Posts
Most of our wooden gates are installed using timber posts. Follow this guide to simplify the installation of new wall-mounted posts.
Important: We strongly recommend staining or painting the entire surface of the posts before installation. This provides better weather protection and helps avoid mess later.
Installation Process
- Check the post length – Ensure the posts are the correct size for your gates. If adjustments are needed, use a sharp saw to cut them to length, making sure the cut is clean and square.
- Position the first post – Hold it against the pillar or wall, ensuring it is plumb, and mark its position for reference.
- Mark fixing points – Space the fixing holes evenly on the post, aiming to secure them directly into brickwork. Use approximately 3-4 fixings for shorts posts, example: 900mm – 1200mm in height, taller posts will require additional fixings to ensure a solid and stable fixture to the wall.
- Drill pilot holes – Remove the post and drill pilot holes at the marked positions, ensuring they match the size of your fixings. This prevents the timber from splitting and makes installation easier.
- Counter-sink the holes – This allows screw heads to sit beneath the surface for a cleaner, more professional finish.
- Drill into the wall – Place the post back against the wall using your marks as a guide. Check it is plumb again, then drill through the holes to make marks on the brickwork.
- Remove the post and fully drill the holes in the wall – Use the pre-marked positions as a guide.
- Insert wall plugs or anchors – Once the holes are drilled, insert the appropriate fixings and tap them flush with the surface using a hammer.
- Secure the post – Reposition the post, align the screws or bolts with the pre-drilled holes, and tighten them, starting from the top. Ensure the post remains plumb in both directions. If needed, use timber packers behind the post to maintain vertical alignment.
- Install the second post – Repeat the process, ensuring it is level with the first post across the opening. Posts must always be parallel to each other at all times to ensure a perfect gate fitting, i.e the measurement between the top of your posts, between the middle of your posts, and between the bottom of your posts should always be the same.
- Final finishing – Once all fixings are secured and tightened, cover the screw heads with wood filler. Allow it to dry, then apply stain to conceal the fixing points. The posts are now ready for the gate installation.
