This comprehensive guide is designed to help you choose the right size for our range of metal garden gates & metal side gates. Selecting the correct width is crucial to ensure a proper fit. Please read through the guide carefully, and if you have any questions, feel free to Contact Us.

Choosing the Right Size – Installing Between Brick Walls

For a long-lasting installation, we recommend mounting our metal gates to a solid brick surface or one of our optional in-ground metal posts. Proper installation ensures durability and stability.

How to Measure Your Opening for a Single Metal Gate

To ensure you order the correct size, follow these steps:

Using a tape measure, record the width of the gap where the gate will be installed.

Measure at three points:

  • The top of the opening (A)
  • The middle of the opening (B)
  • The bottom of the opening (C)

This method helps account for any irregularities in the wall.

Step 2: Choose the Smallest Measurement

If all three measurements are the same, that is your final size. However, if they vary, use the smallest measurement to ensure a proper fit.

Step 3: Understand “Fits Opening” Sizes

Each gate size is listed as a “Fits Opening” measurement, meaning it includes space for hinges and latches. The actual gate width will be slightly smaller to accommodate brackets and fittings. Since these adjustments are already factored in, you do not need to modify your measurements.

Step 4: Select Your Gate Size

Once you have determined the smallest width, choose the gate size that corresponds to it.

💡 Example: If your smallest opening measurement is 1200mm, select a “Fits Opening 1200mm” gate. Although the gate itself will be slightly narrower, it will fit perfectly once installed.

Measuring Examples: Standard Size Single Metal Gates

Example 1 – Standard Size

If the gap between your brickwork is 880mm, you can utilise the following:

That’s it there is nothing else to do, we have already taken the allowances for fittings into consideration, simply place your order.

Example 2 – Standard Size

If the gap between your brickwork is 1014mm, you can utilise the following:

  • 1x Standard-size metal gate with a “Fits Opening” of 914mm (e.g., Abbey Metal Gate)
  • 2x 50mm Metal posts (concreted into the ground)

(Gate Width 914mm, + Two Posts (50mm + 50mm) Total= 1014mm)

Need to Adjust the Gap? Use Our Posts!

If the gap is slightly too wide, you can use our 50mm posts to make up the difference.

💡 Example:
If your gap measures 1167mm, but the closest gate size fits a maximum opening of 1067mm, you can order:

  • 1067mm “Fits Opening” Gate
  • 2x 50mm Posts

This adjustment ensures a perfect fit: 1067mm gate + Two 50mm posts (50mm + 50mm) Total= 1167mm.
